Early UFC Stats Infographic

This project was assigned to my class in order for students to practice data visualization and research/interpretation. The finished project was to be a large printed infographic. The professor that was teaching the class wanted to make more use of the gallery space on campus and so the infographics were to be printed in a large format (greater than 24 x 36 inches) and hung publicly on campus.

For my project I decided to do an infographic about stats in the UFC. I had been training at a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai gym for almost a year and had only seen a few UFC matches on YouTube and events at friends’ houses. So I decided it would be a great excuse to get a subscription to the UFC streaming service and watch as much UFC as I could. I still was a full time (nearly maxed out credits for scholarships) student and was working multiple jobs so I didn’t have a ton of time; so if you read the fine print, the data was based off of only the first 10 UFC events. The research still took a substantial amount of time because those early UFC events did not have time limits to matches. It was actually a lot of fun seeing the early UFC and watching insane matchups and goofy fights. I wish I could have done more events but the design was the true priority of the project.

I also wish I had photos of my poster in all its glory as it was a large and expensive print on a textured quality paper. Unfortunately when it was time to return everyone’s projects I was informed that my poster had been stolen. It sucked (especially at the time because of the cost), but at the same time; maybe it just means someone found it interesting enough to take.
