I knew I wanted to publish books and sell things I produced independently, and in order to do that, I knew I needed to be able to promote those things. I figured product photography would be a quintessential skill to marketing so I decided to enroll in an advanced studio photography course. One of the assignments in the course was to shoot a glass subject with both a black and white background. I wanted to really challenge myself, and so I chose a bottle with a truly translucent liquid.
It may sound simple, but some complicated rigging was involved in ensuring that there was a black line contour for the white background and vice-versa for the black background. Also shooting things with glass planes and mirrors added another challenge in trying to make sure no reflections of the ceiling, rigging, or camera/operator were visible.
Overall I am very satisfied and proud of what I was able to accomplish that early in my product photography endeavors. If I were to change something, I would have taken second shots from the tripod with the focus being on lighting the label and ignoring the glass so I could comp the two together and have the label unrealistically illuminated and more legible in contrast with the glass.
